The invitation from our "birthday party."
Apparently, everyone was having too good of a time
to take pictures. We'll take that as a compliment.

Shortly before New York Buyers' Club First Anniversary Celebration Garden Party and Benefit, we received a sweet birthday gift from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, perhaps best explained by our response...

Dear Tom and Brian,
On behalf of the Foundation for Integrative AIDS Research and the New York Buyers' Club (NYBC), we thank you and Broadway Cares for your generous grant to support our efforts. FIAR is pleased to be serving as the fiscal sponsor for NYBC while it seeks its not-for-profit status.
NYBC, as a young organization, has come a long way in its short existence. Aside from making available low cost, high-quality nutritional supplements for people living with HIV or chronic hepatitis, we are working to ensure that everyone - regardless of their financial status - can access the beneficial supplements we purvey. Recent data have underscored the efficacy of a multivitamin as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan for managing HIV infection.
It has also been our honor to assist our friends and fellow ASOs worldwide through donations of supplements and technical support. Among these are the Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe; Blue Diamond Society of Kathmandu, Nepal; the Thai Treatment Activist Group in Bangkok, Thailand, and Gandeepam in Kilavaiyal, Tamil Nadu, India. This grant will help us to continue providing these life-enhancing agents.
We look forward to continuing our efforts and once again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
New York Buyers' Club

The New York Buyers' Club is proud to announce that our own Mark Hannay has received an award for "Public Health Advocate of the Year" from the Public Health Association of New York City, citing his "coalition building" work. The award, newly-established this year, was given at PHA's annual meeting and dinner, this year held at Sal Anthony's restaurant in Little Italy. Others honored at the dinner included: Dr. Ben Chu, recently-departed President of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation; Susan Waltman, Sr.s VP and General Counsel to the Greater New York Hospital Association; City Councilmember Bill Perkins (D-Harlem); and Jonathan Bennett, Public Affairs Director for the New York Committee on Occupational Safety and Health. Two public health students, Raizy Weinreb, MPH candidate at Brooklyn College, and Heidi Mochari, MPH candidate at Columbia University were also honored. Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Walter Tsou, President of the American Public Health Association.
You go, Mark! |

The Buyers' Club recently began outreach work, sending aid to our friends in developing nations such as Nepal and Zimbabwe. We have also begun sending donations of our multivitamin formula to our friends at Gandeepam in Tamil Nadu, India: they have been working hard to help local people recover after the tsunami devastated coastal villages and killed thousands.

First, all of us here at NYBC would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
It saddens me to report the death of Mr. Frank Rizzi in December. He was here at the beginning, getting his hands dirty when our office was a mere shell. He and I painted the entire office in an all-night marathon to prepare for the impending arrival of a truckload of supplements the next day. He was a genuinely kind and generous soul, a growing rarity it seems sometimes, and he will be sorely missed. We love you, Frank, wherever you are.
In NYBC Members' Store News:
Now back in stock - by popular demand - "Fizzy NAC" (think antioxidant Alka Seltzer!) ACC akut 600 (N-Acetyl-Cysteine). Manufactured by Hexal, imported from Germany. Each bottle contains twenty 600mg wafers of effervecent, pharmaceutical grade NAC. Contains artificial sweeteners as well as Vitamin C. Tastes great! No odor! More expensive than other amino acid/antioxidant combos by a long shot, but it remains very popular!

Not available: "Fuzzy NAC"
(That's our spokesmodel, Mao, who simply
would not be left our of the catalog shoot)

Since opening for business in July, the NYBC shelves have grown more and more crowded, with new products being added regularly. Orders are coming in from places as far-flung as Australia!

July 2, 2004 NYBC Pride Month Update
The New York Buyers' Club was definitely out and about during Pride month, making appearances at the Brooklyn Pride street fair and Folsom Street East, as well as hosting a post-Pride parade party and benefit at Guernica (25 Avenue B) in the East Village, making new friends and contacts, and spreading the word...

Kendall works the booth at Brooklyn Pride.
The New York Buyers' Club has a few thank-you notes: namely to Mr. Anthony Cipriano and his cohorts at Guernica, the swanky lounge that hosted our lovely Pride fundraising event, to Whole Foods, who contributed all the fabulous raw ingredients so our chef, Sean-Michael, could do his thing, and also to Dufour Pasty Kitchens, without whose contribution our chef's scrumptious samosas just wouldn't have been the same!

NYBC Store & Office Takes Shape |
|
Over the past few weeks, the back office and fulfillment house (which, we assure you, is not as exciting or salacious as it sounds) has undergone a dramatic transformation. Originally storage space for President Kendall Morrison and partner Sean-Michael Fleming and their handpicked collection of tools, artwork, and whatnot (mostly whatnot), it has been transformed into office space and storage for NYBC. After the makeover, equipment, generously donated from the now-silent DAAIR office was brought in, and a back office has slowly taken form.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 9, 2004
NEW BUYERS’ CLUB FOR VITAMINS
AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
LAUNCHED IN NEW YORK
“New York Buyers’ Club”
to Serve People Living with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C,
and other Chronic Conditions
(New York) Filling a void left by the closure of the People with AIDS Health Group in 2000 and Direct Access Alternative Information Resources (DAAIR) in 2003, the New York Buyers’ Club (NYBC) is pleased to announce that it will begin operations by July 1, 2004. NYBC is a member-led, member-oriented non-profit organization comprised of people living with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and other chronic conditions." Members offer each other information, mutual support, and affordable access to nutritional supplements and other products crucial to supporting their health and well-being, as well as combating the adverse side effects of their standard medical treatment regimens.
“There’s a real need in our community for NYBC,” said Kendall Morrison, NYBC’s Board President. “Many people living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hep C are often very financially stressed by dealing with their conditions, and a buyers’ club offers a way to obtain useful nutritional supplements at a reasonable cost. But we also want to help each other understand what’s worthwhile based on our own experiences.”
NYBC’s program will consist of:
- A purchasing co-op to obtain appropriate, affordable vitamins and nutritional supplements
- Information on using complementary and alternative approaches to handling these illnesses
- Public forums featuring experts on complementary and alternative approaches
- Informal support/discussion groups on using complementary and alternative approaches
- On-line discussion groups and bulletin boards via our comprehensive web site
- Referrals to reputable health practitioners knowledgeable about complementary approaches
- Partnerships with community-based organizations to undertake a variety of activities
NYBC has begun recruiting members and plans to begin operations on or about July 1. During the month of June, they will be tabling at various street fairs and at Gay Pride Month festivals across the city.
On Wednesday evening June 30, NYBC will hold a Community Meeting to introduce itself to the general public and press, answer questions, and invite people to become members. The meeting will be held at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center located at 208 West 13th Street in Manhattan. All are invited to attend.
“We think there’s great interest in and potential for a buyers’ club here in New York where thousands of people are living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hep C,” said Mark Niedzolkowski, NYBC’s Development Coordinator. “Collectively we have a lot of experience to share with each other on how best to live with our conditions. We’re excited to be joining the vibrant community of organizations already serving our members, and we look forward to collaborating with a variety of people and groups.”
